2013 STEFT Stop 2 - Magic Mountain Results
Photos: Tim Fater/ STE Senior Editor
Stop 2 of the 2013 Ski The East Freeride Tour went down this past Saturday at Magic Mountain's Southern Vermont Freeskiing Challenge. With over 90 competitors turning out, the course on Black Magic was ready for them thanks to being stuffed out with 16 inches of recent snow from earlier in the week. Temperatures were in the 20’s for the day with light flurries falling steadily throughout.

Last year, the Magic Mountain course was moved to an alternate trail on
Red Line due to low snow on the preferred and infamous Black Line. So
this year’s return to the technical Black Line venue was much
anticipated and no one held back. There were some big hucks, epic
falls, and even a little blood spilled (just from a nose).
Thanks
to the mainly untouched snow on Black Line, conditions were the best
they’ve been all season and prime for competitors to make use of the
entire course. The narrow upper section is riddled with cliff bands and
lent itself to some great double stage airs and forcing all skiers to
get creative. On the middle and lower sections of the Black Line,
competitors were able to ramp up their speed since the trail becomes
much wider than the upper section, yet still contains some nice air
options and one Hollywood rollover air right before the finish line.

At the end of the day, the top women’s finisher was Mackenzie Young with a score of 29.25, who previously finished in sixth place at STEFT Stop 1 at Mad River Glen. Young is currently sitting in second place for the STEFT’s overall rankings. Coming in second place at Magic was Matalavage with a score of 28.5. And rounding out third place was a tie between Arielle Gordon-Rowe and Chelsea Marshall, both with a score of 28.25. Both Gordon-Rowe and Marshall finished in the top five at STEFT’s Stop 1, so they now have moved into first and third places in the STEFT’s overall rankings.

The men’s field was a big battle between 68 competitors, and the skier to come away with the first place finish was Nick Edwards, securing a score of 37.75. Previously Edwards took seventh place at STEFT Stop 1 at Mad River Glen, which helped him to now be in third place for the STEFT’s overall rankings. Coming in second place at Magic was Griffin Dunn with a score of 35.50. With his fourth place finish at Mad River Glen, Dunn has claimed second place in the STEFT’s overall rankings. Rounding out third place at Magic was Noah Ranallo, who was hot on the tails of second place Dunn, receiving a score of 35.25.

the upper cliff band section of the course.
